Jewish History of Maribor

The earliest mentions of the Jewish presence in Maribor date back to the late 13th century. Jews settled in a special Jewish quarter in the southeastern part of medieval Maribor. They were engaged in trade and loan business. At the end of the 15th century, they had to leave the city, but behind them the medieval synagogue was preserved, which today houses the public institution Center of Jewish Cultural Heritage Synagogue Maribor. On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of its operation, the Center prepared a documentary exhibition in which, with the help of selected pictorial material, it presents the Jewish history of Maribor from the settlement of Jews in the city, their life and departure at the end of the 15th century, the resettlement of Jews approximately 150 years ago, their co-shaping of the economic and cultural the development of the city between the two world wars, the fate of the Maribor Jews during the Holocaust and their legacy after it. The author of the exhibition is Boris Hajdinjak, director of Synagogue Maribor.
