“The Proposal” and “The Bear”, one-act plays by Anton Pavlovich Chekhov, bring us characters that are both tragic and comic at the same time. Playing what they don’t know about themselves, they discover the truth of life through comedy. Tragically funny, unaware of themselves, they draw us into a game full of love, conflict and liberation. They speak little, but reveal a lot – about themselves, about life, about all of us. There are no big events with Chekhov – as the drama begins, it usually ends. But in these two charming, true and humanly warm one-act plays, Chekhov brings vivid sketch-events, revealing the changes in the characters. We are present at the moment when they, surprised, recognize in themselves new shades of character that they did not even suspect they possessed.
Chekhov’s seemingly ordinary, everyday dialogues, hide a deep truth about us. This is where his genius stands out. The director guides the play, reveals the subtext, and all of this through the prism of laughter and comedy, just as Chekhov always wanted.
