Further explanation for some locations

* Amersfoort
Amersfoort Memorial Monument: Light of Remembrance
A special design by artist Tamar Frank.
On the date of death of each victim—and the evening before—a light burns in the corresponding cube. On May 4, during Remembrance Day, and on January 27, during Holocaust Memorial Day, all the lights burn. In this way, the memory of the victims lives on daily in the monument. The beacon in the pond always burns, symbolizing eternal light.

**Amsterdam
The Mokumse Geniza Foundation
The Mokumse Geniza Foundation was established by Channa Kistemaker in 2017.
The People of the Book have a deep reverence for their religious books. They often last for generations, and when they can no longer be used, they are buried. Or they are stored in a quiet place to slowly decay into dust. The caves of Qumran were such a quiet place. Think also of the famous Geniza of Cairo, where centuries later, fragments of old parchment revealed secrets about Jewish life in the Middle Ages.
At home, Channa collects old religious books in which generations before us have left their mark, bearing witness to who they were and what their Jewish lives were like. Often, they are the only tangible remnants of people who were murdered during the Shoah.

*** Gouda and Tiel
* A Metaheerhuis –Beet Tahara, House of Purification, is a building where Jews are taken when they die. There, while prayers are recited, they are ritually washed, dressed, and laid in a wooden coffin.

Gouda

The Metaheerhouse is no longer in use as such, but has been converted into a memorial and makes an important contribution to preserving the memory of the Jews of Gouda who were killed during the war years.

Tiel

Official rededication of the metaheer cottage on September 14, 2025:
12:30 p.m.: presentation of the restored metaheer cottage to Alderman Frank Groen (responsible for the maintenance of the Jewish cemetery) and Coen Abram, representative of the owner of the Jewish cemetery, the NIK. Also present will be the owners of the construction company ‘Aanpak Bouw en Riool’, which was responsible for the restoration, and several native Tiel residents who survived the Shoah.
