EDJC 2023 > Presentation of the book series “496 Ghettos of Belarus”
The author, historian Vladimir Melnitsky, has dedicated his life to researching the Holocaust and compiling a vast body of evidence, testimonies, and archival materials. His seven-volume series is the most comprehensive account ever undertaken of the ghettos in Belarus. In total, 496 ghettos were established across the country during the Nazi occupation, and each one is described in detail, supported by statistics, personal stories, and the memories of survivors and their descendants.
The series is divided into six regional volumes and a seventh volume devoted to Minsk. The first book, The Minsk Ghetto, sheds light on one of the largest ghettos in Eastern Europe – a place of immense suffering, but also of resilience and resistance.
The presentation will be led by Vladimir Melnitsky himself, who will speak about his personal journey, his lifelong commitment to Holocaust research, and the creation of this extraordinary series.
The first editions of the series are being published in Russian, with plans for translation into English in the near future, ensuring that this invaluable history will be accessible to readers worldwide.
