EDJC 2023 > Status of women in the Tanakh
We often read a number of clichés about the patriarchal family model in the Bible. In fact, these considerations come from outmoded views from the dawn of anthropology, when the model of the family that became established in the middle class during the technical revolution, that is, in the 18th and 19th centuries, seemed to have been in place since time immemorial and was rooted in the Judeo-Christian tradition. The biblical texts, however, show a very different model of society. Not only does the Tanakh single out women or second-born sons and give them a strong voice, but even where the biblical model does not differ much from the widespread ancient Mediterranean family model, we find a surprisingly influential and dignified position for women in the family.
