The president of AEPJ François Moyse attended the Training Seminar for Enlarged Partial Agreement of Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe National Stakeholders in Vilnius, on 19-20 June 2024, at the occasion of the (rotating ) presidency of Lithuania of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe.
The European Routes of Jewish Heritage were presented as a successful example of a European Cultural Route. Indeed AEPJ and his president were specially mentioned to the audience by Mr Alfredas Jomantas , the Head of Division in the Department of Cultural Heritage, whom we commend for his tireless work.
It was an opportunity to visit the restored wooden synagogue of Ziezmariai, and find the AEPJ plaque that we had put there 20 years ago, when a delegation attended a seminar on Jewish Lithuania. While we are proud that this synagogue has been saved, we look forward to continued efforts aiming at finishing the restoration, and hope for the opening to the public of all wooden synagogues of this country, a precious historical heritage .
Together with Mrs. Faina Kukliansky, the President of the Jewish Community of Lithuania, a visit was also paid to the impressive former Zalm synagogue in Vilnius, which is also under restoration.
François also met Mr Daumantas Levas Todesas, the President of the Jewish Heritage Association in Lithuania and encouraged all the actors, public and private, to work together to promote and safeguard this unique heritage. Let us remember the religious importance that the Litvaks played in Jewish history.
AEPJ is ready to stand by all actors in Lithuania to preserve and promote this unique Jewish Heritage of European importance.
