Yom HaShoah, also known as Holocaust Remembrance Day, is a solemn day of commemoration for the six million Jews who were killed during the Holocaust. Observed annually on the 27th of Nissan in the Jewish calendar (usually in April or May), Yom HaShoah is a time for reflection and remembrance.
This year, Yom HaShoah overlaps thematically with the European Days of Jewish Culture (EDJC) 2023, a festival that celebrates Jewish culture and heritage through a series of events and activities. The theme for this year’s EDJC is “Memory,” which is especially fitting given the somber occasion of Yom HaShoah.
While it is important to remember the atrocities of the past, it is equally important to find new ways of remembering. The EDJC offers a unique opportunity to explore and discover different methods of commemorating and honoring the memory of those who were lost.
This year’s festival will feature “Inspiring Memory Sessions,” four sessions dedicated to innovative approaches to memory and remembrance. From art installations to digital exhibits, these sessions will showcase creative and thought-provoking ways of preserving and transmitting collective memory.
As we observe Yom HaShoah and participate in the EDJC, we must remember not only the tragedy of the past, but also the resilience and strength of the Jewish people. Through our continued efforts to preserve and honor the memory of those who were lost, we ensure that their legacy lives on.
