Basics of Hebrew and its peculiarities, Hebrew writing workshop with dr. Samo Skralovnik
(also part of the Come to the BALKON/Sunday project in the Židovska Cultural Quarter)

Hebrew is the original language of all Jews, regardless of where they live today. It is a Semitic language, and its peculiarity is that it is written and read from right to left. The Hebrew alphabet has 22 letters, and five of them can be written in two ways, depending on where in the word the letter appears. It differs from Slovenian in several other peculiarities, and you can learn more about them at the workshop, where participants will, among other things, test their skills in writing personal names in Hebrew. The workshop will be led by dr. Samo Skralovnik.

Salom Street

SALOM STREET – contemporary Jewish cultural and arts festival

You can't do it alone!

We are slowly becoming a tradition, as this year we are organizing our third street festival on the first Sunday of September on Csányi Street. We are holding it on this day for the third time because since 1999, the first Sunday of September has been European Jewish Culture Day in the European Union: Jews and non-Jews celebrate it together in dozens of cities, towns, and communities!

This year, KULT7 has joined forces with the Erzsébetváros Local Government, so we are presenting the most exciting and colorful program yet on the chosen theme, which is the same throughout Europe: PEOPLE OF THE BOOK.
This year, it is perhaps even more important to emphasize that we are organizing this together.

“The Proposal” and “The Bear”, one-act plays by Anton Pavlovich Chekhov, bring us characters that are both tragic and comic at the same time. Playing what they don’t know about themselves, they discover the truth of life through comedy. Tragically funny, unaware of themselves, they draw us into a game full of love, conflict and liberation. They speak little, but reveal a lot – about themselves, about life, about all of us.

Family Records of Osijek Jews – book promotion

The book "Family Records of Osijek Jews" by Hrvoje Volner is based on documents from 1945 that record data on Osijek Jewish families after the Holocaust. From them we learn about the demographic and social structure of the community, deportations, escapes, partisan involvement, and financial circumstances.
The author determines that out of approximately 2,600 Jews, only 446 survived, while more than 2,000 perished, including 220 children. In addition to analytical chapters, the book includes 760 preserved family records as a valuable source for future research and family memory.

“A few more days: Budapest Diary” – promotion of the Hungarian edition of the book

It is autumn 1944, the war days are critical in the Hungarian capital, right-wingers are taking power and intensifying the persecution of Jews, the Allies are bombing the city, the Russians are approaching, all sorts of rumors are circulating; street shootings, the roar of cannons, alarms, cold and hunger, fear and general insecurity… A lonely forty-year-old Osijek man, Alfred Fischer, a Jew, a lawyer by profession, humanist and pacifist, an emigrant in that city for the fourth year, keeps a diary during those months and writes down his fears for himself and his family with whom he shares the fate of refugees. Along with all this he manages to write down serious political thoughts about the future of the Balkan nations after the imminent defeat of the Nazis in the war, and tries to think optimistically about himself as a free man again.

Jewish Osijek – guided tour

This guided tour is designed to stop at ten locations in the city center. At each location, participants will learn about parts of Jewish heritage and specific destinies related to the Holocaust. The emphasis will be less on architecture and more on human stories and understanding the essence of the Holocaust. The route is designed according to the geographical principle, so that no place has to be visited twice. The meeting point and departure point is at the "Šetač" monument on Freedom Square (Trg Slobode), and the planned end of the route is next to the "Humanity" monument (Park Oskara Nemona), which symbolizes a message of hope.

The Story of a Boy

Project "The Story of a Boy" is an educational initiative that was jointly implemented as an inter-school project by students from the Vladimir Nazor Elementary School and the Antun Gustav Matoš Gymnasium in Đakovo under the leadership of teachers Mira Racić and Ines Jančula. The aim of the project was to introduce students to the topic of the Holocaust through the personal story of a Jewish boy, Ruben Frank, born in Đakovo in 1926, who was murdered in the Auschwitz concentration camp in 1942.

Using an interdisciplinary approach, the students explored Ruben's life using archival documents, photographs, letters and testimonies. Ruben's brother Rafael Frank made a special contribution to the project.

The project was financially supported by the Olga Lengyel Institute, an international organization from New York that promotes education about the Holocaust and human rights.
