Mariborska sinagoga – kulturni spomenik državnega pomena, dan odprtih vrat

An Uncomfortable Neighbourhood. Jews in Ukraine Through Time, lecture by Dr Aleš Maver
The Jewish history of today’s Ukraine presents one of the most important parts of Jewish history in Europe. From its Jewish community, many eminent personalities originate, such as the mystic Baal Shem Tov, writers Joseph Roth and Isaak Babel, former Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir and current Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. On the other hand, there are essential places of Jewish martyrdom in Ukraine, such as Babin Yar in Kiev. In the lecture, a walk through the different stages of the Jewish presence in this part of Eastern Europe will be provided by Prof. Dr Aleš Maver, Deputy Head and Department Tutor of the Department of History at the Faculty of Arts, University of Maribor.
Jews in Slovenia in the Middle Ages, presentation of the English translation of the monograph and a discussion with the author Dr Klemen Jelinčič Boeta. The conversation will be moderated by Dr Samo Skralovnik.
This year, the ZRC SAZU Publishing House published an English translation of the revised and updated monograph Jews in Slovenia in the Middle Ages (orig. Judje na slovenskem v srednjem veku, Slovenska matica, 2009) by Dr Klemen Jelinčič Boeta. In the monograph, the author outlined the medieval Jewish history of Carinthia, Styria, Carniola, Gorizia, Trieste and Slovenian part of the Venetian Istria. The outline begins with ancient history, including the history of Aquileia, and ends with the expulsion of the Jews from Carinthia and Styria in 1496 and Carniola in 1515.
